14 Things No One Tells You About Visiting Miami

Miami is one of the hottest cities in America, literally and figuratively. But there are some things you won’t learn from the glossy travel brochures or Instagram photos.

Here are 14 things you need to know before jetting off to the Magic City.

1. Miami is so hot, even the palm trees are asking for a piña colada

They didn’t name their basketball team the Miami Heat for nothing, you know.

Bring breathable clothing and plenty of sunscreen. You don’t want to be caught looking like a boiled lobster, do you?

The good news is, if you’re looking for a free facial, just step outside and let the sauna-like humidity work its magic.

2. Traffic is a Daily Show

Traffic in Miami is no joke. If you can, avoid traveling by car around rush hour. If you do get caught in a traffic jam, embrace the chaos, turn up the tunes, and have some snacks and water on hand. Oh, and don’t let the reckless drivers get to you.

3. Public Transportation Is Available, but…

Yes, Miami does have public transportation, like the (free) metro mover in Downtown and Brickell.

But honestly, it’s not great; it’s limited, a bit slow, and unreliable. You might be better off riding a bike or electric scooter around town.

For further journeys, use a car.

4. Spanish is Everywhere

In Miami, you might feel like you’re in a foreign country because Spanish is widely spoken. If you’re not fluent in Spanish, don’t worry, just bring a good sense of humor and a translator app on your phone.

5. Beaches are Jam-Packed

Everyone loves Miami’s beaches, but they can get more crowded than a can of sardines. Especially South Beach. If you’re looking for a more secluded spot, try going early in the morning or late in the evening.

Keep in mind that Miami Beach is a separate city from Miami. They are connected by a causeway, which is similar to a bridge, so you’ll need to take a car to get from one city to the other.

6. Art Deco is Limited to Miami Beach

Miami Beach’s Art Deco architecture is like a blast to the past. Don’t miss the chance to snap some pics of the colorful and iconic buildings in the Art Deco Historic District.

That said, most of Miami doesn’t really have Art Deco architecture; it’s limited to parts of Miami Beach.

7. Nightlife is extraordinary

Miami’s nightlife is legendary. From charming rooftop bars and dance clubs to live music venues and breweries, there’s something for everyone.

Some clubs are even open past sunrise!

Just know that it can get pricey. Be prepared to pay upwards of $20 for a cocktail, and a hefty cover charge for entrance to many of the clubs. You’ll want to befriend a promoter for deals.

8. Family-Friendly Fun

Miami is not just for adults.

There are plenty of family-friendly activities, such as visiting the Miami Children’s Museum, Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science, Zoo Miami, Jungle Island, and Puttshack (before 8pm) for mini-golf.

9. When it Comes to Finding Parking, May the Odds Be Ever in Your Favor

If you’re lucky enough to find a parking spot, be prepared to pay a fortune.

Most street parking is paid using the Pay By Phone app, so download it ahead of time.

If you’re only traveling a short distance, consider another means of transportation so you don’t need to pay for parking.

10. The Everglades: Great for Nature Lovers

If you’re a nature lover or a fan of alligators check out the Everglades national park. If you’re up for an adventure, try air boating through the swamp and see if you can spot some gators. Just don’t forget your mosquito repellent!

But if you’re not particularly outdoorsy (you know who you are) you can skip the Everglades.

11. Art is Everywhere

Miami’s art scene is as diverse and colorful as the city itself. The Wynwood area has loads of vibrant street art. Visit the Perez Art Museum for some of the world’s best art exhibitions. If you’re traveling during early December, head to Art Basel events for extra art and fun!

12. Don’t Skip Little Havana

Little Havana is a vibrant neighborhood that feels like a slice of Cuba in the heart of Miami. Take a stroll down SW 8th Street to experience a taste of Havana. You’ll find plenty of abuelitos (grandpas) playing dominoes and smoking cigars.

13. Cuban Food is a Samba for Your Taste Buds

Speaking of Little Havana, Miami’s Cuban cuisine is like a fiesta in your mouth. Contrary to popular belief though, it’s not spicy!

Be sure to try some of the best Cuban dishes, like Ropa Vieja and Cuban Sandwiches. Remember to order the highly sought-after Cuban coffee for a small but mighty afternoon pick-me-up.

14. The Food Scene Goes Beyond Cuban Food

Miami’s food scene is highly impressive. New and highly esteemed restaurants are cropping up every month. From Mediterranean to plant-based to fusion, you’re sure to find something for all preferences.

If you’re in a big group, check out food halls for a variety of cuisine under one roof: Time Out Market, MIA Market, and The Citadel are great options.

In short, Miami is a city that will steal your heart and leave you wanting more. From the sunny beaches to the lively nightlife and delicious Cuban cuisine, Miami has something for everyone.

Just remember to stay hydrated, pack your sunscreen, and bring an open mind and sense of adventure.

So book your flight, pack your bags, and get ready for an unforgettable trip to the Magic City.

Happy travels!
